Century of Compassion: Mission Possible Instead of doing a formal volunteer event in Los Angeles during the month of March, Century of Compassion is inviting everyone, everywhere to perform a radical act of compassion sometime during the week of March 21-27: Your Mission (we hope you choose to accept it) is to perform a compassionate deed for a homeless or impoverished person. We invite you to use your imagination and be ambitious. Here are some ideas to get your compassionate juices flowing: -Buy a homeless person lunch. Consider being extra-compassionate by sitting and eating lunch with him or her. Ask about his or her situation and be a caring ear. -If you are the kind of person who will normally give a dollar to a homeless person, then try this: Wrap your dollar bills around bottles of water. Then, each time you give a dollar you are also giving a little extra gesture of caring. -If you have people in your community who sell oranges at intersections or freeway off ramps, then buy a bag (or five!) of oranges and deliver them to a local homeless shelter. You’re not only helping someone who needs the income, but providing fresh fruit and brightening the day of members of the homeless community. -Do you know anyone who has been laid off due to the economic downturn? Make that person and their family a hot meal. Or – If you are handy – perhaps you can offer some specific help like performing maintenance on their car – it requires reliable transportation to make it to job interviews. -Do you know any elderly folks who are on fixed incomes? They might need help with things that they can’t afford to pay others to do for them – spring cleaning, maintenance, etc. -Do you have ideas of your own that you would like to share? Please email them to us and we'll will share them on our website. After you perform your radical act(s) of compassion, please share your story with us. This is a community event, so please invite your friends to perform your radical act of compassion with you. |
