What is Compassion? The American Heritage dictionary defines compassion as the "Deep awareness of the suffering of another coupled with the wish to relieve it." Why Compassion? Compassion is the common denominator that binds us all together. We each have a desire to be happy and to avoid suffering. By allowing our natural compassion to guide our judgments, we quickly come to notice ways in which we can make a positive difference in the world around us. Why 'Century of Compassion'? You may find yourself asking, “Why Century of Compassion?” The answer to that question begins with a look back. The 20th century was undoubtedly the bloodiest in history. The world saw more war, genocide, and destruction than it did in any previous century. We now stand at an important crossroads. Will we shape our new century in the image of the last one, or will we seize this opportunity to move mankind to a new level of peace and prosperity? We have the informational and technological means to make this century the most free and peace-filled century ever. At the very root of this ability lies the compassion that each of us holds within our hearts. It has been said that compassion is the basis of all morality. It is, therefore, the most basic element of tolerance, forbearance, empathy, love, and equality. Through the word “compassion” we can think both globally and personally. A nation can show compassion toward other nations, or a person can show compassion to his or her neighbor. It is something that can be given and received. If we each focus ourselves on leading lives of compassion and expect the same of our leaders, we will accomplish truly tremendous things. Compassion is our greatest hope. Through compassion we will have our brightest future. |
